Report from energy seminar on Skeppsholmen

Green Islands gave a energy seminar on Skeppsholmen on the 13´nth of May.

18 students from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) have been looking into different energy efficient and sustainable techniques that can be applicable on some of the houses in the archipelago.
The students were handed nine different energy assignments were sustainability, energy efficiency and cost efficiency were the focus areas.

Lena Nyberg (CEO), Jonathan Alm and Cecilia Wibjörn from the Archipelago foundation opened the seminar by welcoming all and also thanking KTH for the good cooperation. The studies will help the Archipelago foundation in the process when upgrading to more sustainable techniques.

Seminar about Environmental Attitudes of Boat Tourists

Kajsa Mellbrand presented the results from the boat tourism survey of the Green Islands project during a seminar at Aronia in Ekenäs, Finland.
The survey investigates Baltic Sea environmental attitudes and how environment affects activities of boat tourists in the archipelago. The results show that in particular algal blooms and eutrophication is considered a problem by boat tourists, and affects their activities when visiting the archipelago.

Swedes in the survey have more positive opinion of Baltic Sea environment than Finns do. The survey also shows that nature is the most important factor for boat tourists when visiting the archipelagos, and that the traditional open cultural landscape (along with clean beaches and marine environment) on islands is considered one of the most important nature characteristics on islands.

The survey is a collaboration between Kajsa Mellbrand and Andreas Brutemark at the Aronia research and
Development Institute, Jonas Ahnesjö at Linneus University, Fredrik Olsson at Umeå University, and Anne Palkeinen at the Novia University of Applied Sciences who presented her bachelor project on the subject earlier this year.

Groundwater mapping seminar on Muhu

Green Islands had a Groundwater mapping seminar on the 10-th May on Muhu.
The seminar was held in Muhu town hall and was attended by officials from the municipality, groundwater mapping experts and project personnel. The groundwater mapping consultant presented the results of their work and explained how the map/tool work and how it can be useful for the municipality.
- It was a great seminar and in the end the experts decided with the municipality to work on adding one more layer to make the map even more useful says Triin Vook

Environmental attitudes of boat tourists

In the Green Islands project, bachelor student Anne Palkeinen from Novia University of Applied Sciences, Finland has recently finished her exam project on the attitudes of boat tourists to Baltic Sea environment.

Anne´s project is a part of the ecosystem service research done within the Green Islands project at the Aronia Research and Development Institute in Finland, where the boat tourism survey is an ongoing collaboration between Kajsa Mellbrand (Anne´s supervisor at Aronia), Andreas Brutemark (Aronia, Finland), Jonas Ahnesjö (Linnaeus University, Sweden) and Fredrik Olsson (Umeå University, Sweden).

During summer 2012 Anne conducted a questionnaire survey with boat tourists on a total of eleven islands in Finland, Sweden and Estonia, of which nine are included in the Green Islands project.
The results, published in Anne´s bachelor thesis, give valuable insights into environmental concerns and attitudes of boat tourists visiting the archipelago, and how environmental problems affect their experience.
The results also highlights the high value of nature as an attraction for tourists, further underlining the value of nature conservation and a sustainable environment for tourism in the area.

Green Islands displayed on popular exhibition

The Archipelago Foundation and Aquaria teamed up for the exhibition “Skräpet ska upp till ytan”. The exhibition can be seen on Aquaria in Stockholm and will be open until March 17th. Here you can see how much waste thats been left on the bottom of two small harbors. Green Islands have one of the information stands on display.

Green Islands participates in toolbox seminar in Riga

Cecilia Wibjörn participated in the toolbox seminar in Riga.

Green Islands was one of 32 projects that got together in Riga on February the 20th, for
clustering and learning on good examples regarding keeping project results alive.
As many projects are coming to an end during 2013, the topic of project closure and
maintenance of project results were chosen for the topics of the seminar.

Cecilia presented the project and how we are planning for the upcoming closure.

WG meeting in Helsinki

Green Islands eight working group meeting took place on the 21st of February in Helsinki, Finland.
On the agenda was the project results. Rolf Holmberg and Kajsa Mellbrand presented their work with carbon dioxide emissions and ecosystem services.

The Archipelago Foundation and Aquaria water museum have teamed up for a great cause.
– We want to raise peoples awareness when it comes to littering and recycling, says Karin Strandfager Environmental manager at the Archipelago foundation.

The Archipelago foundation has during a ten year period used divers to clean the sea floor in some of the most popular harbors. Some of the garbage will be displayed during the exhibition.

The exhibition “Skräpet ska upp till ytan” will be on display on Aquaria on Djurgården between February 15 and March 17.

KTH-Students saving energy

Green Islands and The Archipelago foundation have once more been fortunate to receive help from KTH-students. There are five more energy projects that need to be looked at.

Two students, Kaj Maass and Eric Mugisha are going to look into the possibility to change the insulation in the hostel on Fejan. The existing insulation works porly and the energy needed to heat the building is very high. Kaj and Eric are also going to look at different heating systems.
